Dec 9, 2023 — Wounded Warrior Hunt

Please come out to the Sandhills Pointing Breeds Club and join us for a Wounded Warrior Hunt on Saturday, December 9, from 7:15am to 3pm.

Soldiers from the Fort Bragg will be joining us for a day of chukar and quail hunting at 8am.

Volunteers should be at the club by 7:15am to set up for the event, Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the local American Legion, Aberdeen, NC Post 72 District 16.

This club event is my favorite. Watching these men and women have a good time is so rewarding. Most have never spent any time with hunting dogs and quail and are most appreciative for the opportunity. It is great way to spend a day and show appreciation for the job they do. I hope you can help.

We need a lot of help. We will have groups in Fields #2, #3, and #4. Each group will have one dog with a handler, two soldier/gunners each with a club coach, and bird planters on ATVs.

We would like to have enough dogs to put a fresh dog down every 40 minutes. For your dog’s safety, the dog should be steady to flush, wing, shot, and fall. Your dog should reliably retrieve. This event is not a training exercise. Dogs with AKC Master and Senior titles or a NAVHDA Utility title are dogs with the proper behaviors. The soldiers will not have shotguns so we need to have members let the soldiers use their guns. Double barreled, break open guns in the sub gauges (20 and 28) are preferred. A semi auto or pump is too complicated for a first timer shooter.

We will be using chukar and quail. Chukar, because they are larger straight flyers, and are easier for a first time shooter to take. More success. Quail, because they are smaller and erratic flyers, are harder to hit. More challenge. I would like to thank Janie Bristow and Ron Hobbs for donating the chukar and Seawell’s Quail Farm for donating the quail.

Making the hunt safe and successful, but fun, is the goal.

We also need monetary donations to cover food and birds for the event. In addition, we are asking for drink and baked goods donations.

Please email or call me by Tuesday, November 28, to let me know what role you would like to play and what you can bring (dogs, guns, drinks, ice, baked goods). Do you want breakfast and lunch? Donation checks should be made out to the Sandhills Pointing Breeds Club (SPBC for short). I will take checks at the event or you can mail them to the club Treasurer: Scott Smith: 1315 Free State Drive, Charlottesville VA 22901.
